Welcome to the 2020-21 basketball season!
- COVID has changed practice, the number of games, and even the number of spectators at games. Be assured that we will face situations and obstacles that will impact our season, but I am excited and grateful that we are having a season. I ask you to keep perspective on what is important this year. The most important thing is staying healthy and safe so we are able to enjoy a full season.Â
- The only way this basketball season is going to work is if we follow the guidelines. Wearing masks and social distancing is a must in and outside of school. You need to be honest when it comes to possible symptoms. Don’t jeopardize the whole team by not reporting symptoms immediately.Â
- I have attached a separate COVID guidelines button to cover COVID-related guidelines and protocols.
- The MSHSL has decided on a 18-game season. We can have no more than 2 games a week until the final 2 weeks of the season. We could have 3 games a week at that point to fit in games that have been postponed due to COVID or weather.
- There will be a postseason at this point in time. What the postseason looks like and what it involves is yet to be determined.Â
- At this time, no spectators will be allowed at games. But things may change from day to day. The game will be streamed live so go to the school app for details.Â
- At this point, we will take buses to games, however, be prepared for the possibility of players having to ride to and from games with their parents. This may occur if maintaining social distancing on buses becomes an issue.
- Due to only 5 freshmen out for basketball, our C-squad will consist of freshmen and sophomores.
Academic Expectations
Basketball is a privilege that is earned not a right. It is a privilege that is earned by following the academic expectations of this school. Your top priority is to give your best effort to your academic responsibilities. I understand that not all subjects will be easy and you may struggle at times. But then I expect you to seek help from your teachers before you get to the point of having to deal with the following situations.
- Any players with failing grades will not be allowed to practice or play games until their grades are up. You will be expected to meet with teachers until grades are up. I have instructed teachers to email once your grades are up so you can get back to practice.Â
- Any player that has missed work and I have been notified by a teacher, will not be allowed to practice until the work is turned in. Teachers will send me an email when you have completed your work so they can return to practice.
- Any player whose behavior is disrespectful or inappropriate in the classroom will not be allowed to practice or play games until you have resolved the problem with your teacher.
I will be conducting grade checks every 2 weeks. You are to give the grade sheets to your teachers to fill in your present grade and any comments they have. You must return the grade sheet within 2 days.
COVID Guidelines and Protocols
- Participation in MSHSL activities is voluntary.
- While participating in MSHSL activities, all laws as well as MSHSL and school rules, guidelines, and protocols related to COVID-19 must be followed.
- Due to the contagious nature of COVID-19, participants acknowledge and understand that there is a risk of injury and/or illness from participating in MSHSL activities, including the risk of having direct or indirect contact with individuals who have been exposed to and/or diagnosed with COVID-19.
              Diagnosed with COVID Protocols
- Players diagnosed with COVID-19 will be required to quarantine for 7-10 days from the time of contraction.
- After the period of quarantine, the player will be required to go through a return-to-play protocol for 7-14 days under the supervision of a doctor/physical therapist.
- Players will only be allowed to play only after a doctor has signed off on the return to play protocol.
               CLOSE CONTACT Protocol
- Players in close contact with positive cases of COVID-19 will be required for 14 days from the time of contact.
- After 14 days, the player will be allowed to return to play.
Practice Guidelines
- Masks must be worn in practice and games at all times.
- Masks will be worn by coaches, staff, and other personnel at all times.
- While you can’t avoid contact while playing, please avoid close contact on the sidelines. It may mean the difference between sitting out or getting to play if we have a COVID case. The cameras will be checked and will determine if you need to be quarantined or not.Â
- Drills and scrimmages will be designed to limit the amount of time you are in close contact with any player during practice. Â
- There will be no team huddles during practice.
- You will maintain 6 feet spacing when on the sideline or receiving instruction.
- You must sanitize your hands before, during, and after practice.
- You must bring a clearly marked water bottle with your name on it to practice as you will not be able to use the water fountain.
- Be sure to keep track and use only your own water bottle and jersey.
- You will not be able to shower at school.
- Leave the facilities as soon as practice is over.
- You will change clothes in small groups to avoid close contact.
- Equipment will be sanitized every night after practice.
 Game Guidelines
- Masks will be worn at all times including during the game.
- Masks will be worn by coaches, staff, and other personnel at all times.
- We will bring our own balls to all games for warmups.
- You must have your clearly marked water bottle which will filled only by you.
- Warm-ups must be taken off and stored in your designated area.
- Spacing will be practiced on the bench.
- We will be given a designated team area when we arrive at a visiting gym and will stay in that area.Â
- Starting lineups will be introduced and line up on the free throw line in front of the bench we are sitting at.
- Appropriate signs of respect and sportsmanship will utilized instead of handshakes after the game.
- You will not be allowed to gather with spectators after a game so we will exit the floor right after a game.
- Post-game meetings will be short so we can leave the facilities in a reasonable amount of time.
- You will not shower after games but will be able to change into different clothes.Â
- There is no food and water on the bus to and from the games.
- You will sit ONEÂ person per seat and will stay in your seat to and from the game.
