Minnesota Reading Corp is an AmeriCorps program that provides trained literacy tutors for children age three to grade three. It is a statewide initiative to help every MN child become a successful reader by the end of third grade.  The program places AmeriCorps members as literacy tutors in sites across Minnesota to implement a research-based early literacy effort to help struggling readers. Since 2003, Minnesota Reading Corps has grown from serving 250 children to above 30,000 at more than 600 sites statewide.  Literacy tutors serve as one-on-one tutors and provide interventions to students who are just below proficiency in reading.  The tutors meet with each student daily for 20 minutes to build phonics, phonemic awareness, and fluency skills.
Twyla Carlson is our Minnesota Reading Corps member serving Grade 1 in Pipestone this year. Laura Thode is our Minnesota Reading Corps member serving second and third grade. We are happy to announce that we have added the K-Focus program this year. Abby Palacios is our Minnesota Reading Corps member for this program. They were all  trained the end of August to learn the interventions used in the program, and will continue to have on-going training.  Each will work with 15 to 17 students daily. Students are exited from the program when they consistently meet Benchmark scores.
